The H2–O2 fuel cell combines H2 and O2 electrochemically to give electricity + water at ~1.23 V.

A fuel cell is a galvanic cell in which the energy of combustion of a fuel is converted directly into electrical energy. In the hydrogen–oxygen fuel cell, hydrogen and oxygen are bubbled over porous carbon electrodes containing a catalyst (finely divided Pt/Pd) dipped in concentrated KOH (or NaOH) electrolyte.

Anode (oxidation): 2H2 + 4OH- → 4H2O + 4e-

Cathode (reduction): O2 + 2H2O + 4e- → 4OH-

Overall: 2H2 + O2 → 2H2O
