Three key differences:
-
Nature of forces: In physisorption (physical adsorption), the adsorbate is held to the adsorbent surface by weak van der Waals forces. In chemisorption (chemical adsorption), the adsorbate forms an actual chemical bond (covalent or ionic in character) with the adsorbent surface.
-
Enthalpy of adsorption: Physisorption has a low enthalpy of adsorption, typically in the range 20-40 kJ/mol. Chemisorption has a much higher enthalpy of adsorption, typically 80-240 kJ/mol, reflecting the stronger bonding involved.
