Osmotic pressure (pi) is the pressure needed to stop osmosis of solvent into a solution; since pi = CRT depends only on the number of dissolved particles, it is a colligative property.

Definition: When a solution is separated from the pure solvent by a semipermeable membrane (which allows only solvent molecules to pass through), solvent molecules move spontaneously into the solution by osmosis. Osmotic pressure is defined as the minimum excess pressure that must be applied to the solution side to exactly stop this net flow of solvent into it.

Showing it is a colligative property: van't Hoff showed that dilute solutions obey a relation exactly analogous to the ideal gas law:

pi V = nRT

where pi = osmotic pressure, V = volume of solution, n = number of moles of solute, R = gas constant, T = absolute temperature. Rearranging,

pi = (n/V) RT = C R T

where C = n/V is the molar concentration of the solute.
