Potassium dichromate is manufactured from chromite ore in three stages (fusion to sodium chromate, acidification to sodium dichromate, conversion to the potassium salt); on strong heating it decomposes releasing oxygen.

Preparation of K2Cr2O7 from chromite ore (FeCr2O4):

Step 1 - Fusion: powdered chromite ore is fused with excess sodium/potassium carbonate in free access of air (or with an oxidising agent), converting it to sodium chromate and iron(III) oxide:

4FeCr2O4 + 8Na2CO3 + 7O2 --[fuse]--> 8Na2CrO4 + 2Fe2O3 + 8CO2

Step 2 - Acidification: the yellow solution of sodium chromate is filtered (to remove insoluble Fe2O3) and acidified with sulfuric acid, converting the chromate (yellow) to the more soluble dichromate (orange):

2Na2CrO4 + H2SO4 -> Na2Cr2O7 + Na2SO4 + H2O

Step 3 - Conversion to potassium salt: the sodium dichromate solution is treated with potassium chloride; potassium dichromate, being less soluble than sodium dichromate, crystallises out on cooling:
