A matrix that is not square — meaning its number of rows and columns are unequal — is called a rectangular matrix. The final answer is rectangular.

The idea is simple: matrices are classified by their shape. A square matrix has the same number of rows and columns, like a 3×33 \times 3 or 2×22 \times 2. When that condition fails, we need a name for the "other" kind.

  1. Recall the definition of a square matrix.

    A matrix AA of order m×nm \times n is called square if m=nm = n. For example, (1234)\begin{pmatrix} 1 & 2 \\ 3 & 4 \end{pmatrix} is 2×22 \times 2, so it's square.

  2. Now consider the opposite case.

If m≠nm \neq n, the matrix is not square. The standard term for any matrix that is not square is rectangular matrix. This includes all m×nm \times n matrices where mm and nn are different — whether it's 2×32 \times 3, 4×14 \times 1, or 1×51 \times 5.

Tip

A row matrix (1×n1 \times n) and a column matrix (m×1m \times 1) are both special cases of rectangular matrices — they are not square because one dimension is 1 and the other is greater than 1. …
