Wave-particle duality is the concept that radiation and matter both display wave-like and particle-like behaviour, with the appropriate description depending on the phenomenon being observed.

Classical physics treated light purely as a wave (explaining interference, diffraction, polarization very successfully) and matter purely as particles. However, phenomena like the photoelectric effect and the Compton effect could only be explained if light behaved as discrete packets of energy called photons, each carrying energy E=hνE = h\nu and momentum p=h/λp = h/\lambda — a particle-like picture.

Conversely, de Broglie proposed that particles of matter (electrons, protons, etc.) also possess a wave nature, with an associated wavelength λ=h/p\lambda = h/p — confirmed experimentally by the Davisson-Germer experiment, which showed electron diffraction.
