K_max vs ν is Einstein's photoelectric equation — a straight line of slope h that meets the ν-axis at the threshold frequency ν_0, not at the origin.

Einstein explained the photoelectric effect using the photon picture of light. When a photon of energy hν strikes a metal surface, part of this energy (the work function φ_0) is used to free the electron from the metal, and the remainder appears as the electron's kinetic energy:

K_max = hν − φ_0

This has the form of a straight line y = mx + c, with K_max as y, ν as x, slope m = h (Planck's constant), and intercept c = −φ_0.

Because the intercept is −φ_0 (not zero), the line does NOT pass through the origin:
