Einstein's photoelectric equation says the maximum kinetic energy of an emitted photoelectron equals the photon energy minus the metal's work function.

Einstein explained the photoelectric effect by treating light as a stream of photons, each of energy hνh\nu. When a photon is absorbed by an electron in the metal, part of its energy (ϕ0\phi_0) is used to free the electron from the metal surface (the work function), and the rest appears as the electron's kinetic energy. For the most energetic (surface) electrons, this gives the maximum kinetic energy:

KEmax=hν−ϕ0KE_{max} = h\nu - \phi_0

Symbols:

  • hh = Planck's constant (6.63×10−346.63\times10^{-34} J s)
  • ν\nu = frequency of the incident light …
