A coil rotating in a magnetic field has changing flux, inducing an alternating e.m.f. e = NBAw sin(wt); slip rings deliver AC to the external circuit.

(A labelled diagram is to be drawn; the description below states its parts and working.)

Principle: An AC generator (dynamo) works on the principle of electromagnetic induction - when the magnetic flux linked with a coil changes, an e.m.f. is induced in it (Faraday's law).

Main parts (to label in the diagram):

  • Field magnet: a strong magnet (or electromagnet) providing a uniform magnetic field B between its poles.
  • Armature: a rectangular coil of N turns wound on a soft-iron core, rotated in the field.
  • Slip rings: two rings S1S_1 and S2S_2 fixed to the ends of the coil, rotating with it.
  • Brushes: two carbon brushes B1B_1 and B2B_2 pressing against the slip rings to connect the rotating coil to the external circuit.

Working: The coil of area A and N turns is rotated with uniform angular velocity ω\omega in the field B. At time t the plane of the coil makes an angle, and the flux linked is Φ=NBAcos⁡ωt\Phi = NBA\cos\omega t. By Faraday's law the induced e.m.f. is

ε=−dΦdt=−ddt(NBAcos⁡ωt)=NBAωsin⁡ωt=ε0sin⁡ωt,\varepsilon = -\frac{d\Phi}{dt} = -\frac{d}{dt}(NBA\cos\omega t) = NBA\omega\sin\omega t = \varepsilon_0\sin\omega t, …
