Half-life is when half the sample decays (T_1/2 = ln2/λ); average life is the mean lifetime of an individual nucleus (τ = 1/λ), and τ = 1.44 T_1/2.

Radioactive decay follows N = N_0 e^(−λt), where λ is the decay constant.

Half-life (T_1/2): the time interval in which the number of undecayed nuclei (or the activity) of a radioactive sample reduces to exactly half its initial value. Setting N = N_0/2 in the decay law gives:

T_1/2 = (ln 2)/λ = 0.693/λ

Average life (τ, also called mean life): the average of the lifetimes of all the individual (undecayed) nuclei in the sample, obtained by summing the lifetime of every nucleus and dividing by the total number of nuclei. It works out to be the reciprocal of the decay constant:

τ = 1/λ
