Nuclear force is strong, short-range, charge-independent, and saturating (attractive at normal range but repulsive at very short range).

Four important properties of the nuclear (strong) force that binds protons and neutrons:

  1. Strongest fundamental force — at nuclear distances it is far stronger than the electrostatic repulsion between protons, which is why nuclei hold together.

  2. Short range — it acts only over about 11-3 fm3\ \text{fm}; beyond a few femtometres it falls essentially to zero, so distant nucleons do not feel it.

  3. Charge independent — the force between two protons, two neutrons, or a proton and a neutron is the same; it does not depend on electric charge.
