Fission = splitting a heavy nucleus (U-235); fusion = joining light nuclei (H isotopes -> He). Both release energy.

Nuclear fission:

  • The breaking up of a heavy, unstable nucleus into two (or more) lighter nuclei of comparable mass, along with the emission of neutrons and a large amount of energy.
  • Usually triggered by a nucleus absorbing a slow neutron; the released neutrons can cause a chain reaction (used in nuclear reactors and atom bombs).
  • Example: 92235U+01n→56141Ba+3692Kr+3 01n+energy.^{235}_{92}U + ^{1}_{0}n \rightarrow ^{141}_{56}Ba + ^{92}_{36}Kr + 3\,^{1}_{0}n + \text{energy}.

Nuclear fusion:

  • The combining (fusing) of two light nuclei into a single heavier nucleus, releasing energy.
  • Requires extremely high temperature and pressure to overcome the Coulomb repulsion between the nuclei (thermonuclear reaction); it is the energy source of stars including the Sun.
  • Example: 12H+13H→24He+01n+energy.^{2}_{1}H + ^{3}_{1}H \rightarrow ^{4}_{2}He + ^{1}_{0}n + \text{energy}. …
