For a simple microscope held a distance a from the eye, the magnifying power is M = 1 + (D - a)/f.

A simple microscope is a single convex lens of short focal length f used as a magnifier. The object is placed within the focus so that an erect, virtual, magnified image is formed. The magnifying power is the ratio of the angle subtended at the eye by the image (β\beta) to the angle subtended by the object placed at the least distance of distinct vision D (α\alpha):

M=βα.M = \frac{\beta}{\alpha}.

For small angles, if the final image is formed at the near point, the image is at distance D from the eye. When the lens is held at a distance a from the eye, the image is at distance (D−a)(D - a) from the lens. Using the lens formula with image distance v=−(D−a)v = -(D - a) (virtual image), the linear magnification of the lens gives the angular magnification

M=1+D−af.M = 1 + \frac{D - a}{f}. …
