Q.An a.c. source vmsin⁡ωtv_m\sin\omega t is connected in series with a resistor to a pair of output terminals. An ideal diode is connected directly across the output terminals with its arrow pointing downward — its anode on the upper output line and its cathode on the lower (return) line. The output is taken across this diode. What is the nature of the output?

(a) would be zero at all times.
(b) would be like a half wave rectifier with positive cycles in output.
(c) would be like a half wave rectifier with negative cycles in output.
(d) would be like that of a full wave rectifier.

The diode sits directly across the output with its anode on the upper line. On positive half-cycles it is forward biased and short-circuits the output to about 0 V0\,\text{V}; on negative half-cycles it is reverse biased and the input appears at the output. So only the negative half-cycles survive.

Concept

The output voltage equals the voltage across the diode.

  • Positive half-cycle (upper line positive): the diode is forward biased, conducts, and behaves as a short ⇒\Rightarrow output ≈0\approx 0.
  • Negative half-cycle (upper line negative): the diode is reverse biased and acts as an open circuit ⇒\Rightarrow no current in the series resistor ⇒\Rightarrow the full (negative) input appears across the output. …
