'Wrongly debited by the bank' = the bank has reduced the customer's passbook balance by a debit it should not have made.

It appears only in the passbook, so it causes a difference from the cash book.

Concept. In the passbook, a debit to the customer's account reduces the balance (money going out / amount owed by the customer). When the bank passes such a debit in error — an amount that does not relate to this customer, or a wrong figure — it is said to have wrongly debited the account. Since the customer's cash book has no such entry, the passbook balance becomes lower than the cash book balance by that amount.

Example (with treatment). Suppose the bank, by mistake, debits ₹500 to Mr. A's account that actually belonged to Mr. B.

RecordsEffect
Passbook (Mr. A)Debited ₹500 in error → balance reduced by ₹500
Cash book (Mr. A)No entry → balance unchanged
DifferencePassbook is lower than cash book by ₹500
