Model the girder as a downward-opening parabola with vertex at the highest point; use the end-point data to fix the parabola, then find the drop at 20 m from mid-point.

Parabola with vertex at origin, axis vertical, opening downward (measuring yy as the drop below the vertex): x2=4ayx^2=4ay.

  1. Place the origin at the vertex (highest point, centre of the girder), with xx measured horizontally and yy measured as the drop below the vertex.
  2. The span is 100 m, so each end is at x=50x=50 m from the centre. The vertex is 10 m above the ends, so the drop at the ends is y=10y=10 m.
  3. Substitute (50,10)(50,10) into x2=4ayx^2=4ay: 502=4a(10)⇒2500=40a⇒a=62.550^2=4a(10)\Rightarrow2500=40a\Rightarrow a=62.5.
  4. Parabola: x2=250yx^2=250y. …
