The idea (flowchart symbols). A flowchart is the graphical form of an algorithm, and each shape has one fixed, standard meaning — that is what makes flowcharts readable by anyone. Matching shape to function is therefore pure recall of the standard convention.
The matching
| # | Flowchart symbol | Function | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rounded rectangle / stadium (terminator) | Start/Stop of the Process | Every flowchart begins and ends with exactly this terminator shape. |
| 2 | Parallelogram | Data | The slanted box is the input/output symbol — data entering (INPUT/READ) or leaving (PRINT/DISPLAY) the process. |
| 3 | Rectangle | Process Step | A plain box holds a computation or assignment, e.g. total = price * qty. |
| 4 | Diamond | Decision Making | The diamond asks a yes/no question; control leaves along the Yes or No arrow — the flowchart form of a conditional. |
| 5 | Arrow | Flow of Control | Arrows connect the symbols and show the order in which the steps execute. |
