Q.Each Olympic Games has its own medal design. From 1928-2004, the front side of every Olympic Games medal carried an image of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, the Olympic Rings, the Coliseum of ancient Athens, an amphora, a horse-drawn chariot, and the year, number of the Olympiad, and host city — a new design was created for the 2004 Games. Design a medal for the Olympic Games if they were to be held in your town.

Keep the IOC's fixed front-side specifications, then personalise the reverse with a landmark or symbol from your own town — exactly what real host cities are permitted to do.

The textbook explains that while medal designs have varied considerably since 1896, "the IOC has laid down the physical properties of the medals and has the final decision about the finished design," even though the medals are actually manufactured by the host country's NOC. Crucially, "each host city has allowed to add special details to the other side" of the medal — this is exactly where your creative design belongs.

Keep fixed (per the IOC's own rules): a circular shape with an attachment for a chain or ribbon; a diameter of at least 60mm; a thickness of at least 3mm; correct material (gold = min. 92.5% silver plated with 6g of gold; silver = 92.5% silver; bronze = 97.0% copper, 0.5% tin, 2.5% zinc); and the name of the sport engraved somewhere on the medal. …
