Intellectual disability limits reasoning, learning and adaptive behaviour from the developmental period; caused prenatally/perinatally/postnatally; slows learning and communication.

Meaning: Intellectual disability is a significant limitation in intellectual functioning — reasoning, learning and problem-solving — together with limitations in adaptive behaviour (practical and social skills of daily life), that originates during the developmental period (before adulthood).

Causes:

  • Prenatal (before birth): genetic or chromosomal conditions, maternal infection or malnutrition during pregnancy.
  • Perinatal (during/around birth): birth complications, oxygen deprivation, very premature or low-birth-weight birth.
  • Postnatal (after birth): head injury, brain infection, or severe early-childhood malnutrition.
