Concept of skill. A skill is the learned, refined ability to perform a movement or task effectively — accurately, consistently and efficiently — in the real, often changing conditions of the sport. Unlike a single technique (the correct way to do one movement), a skill involves choosing and applying the right movement at the right time. Skills are developed through correct technique, practice and experience.
One classification of skills — open vs closed skills:
- Open skills are performed in a changing, unpredictable environment, where the performer must constantly adjust to external factors such as moving opponents, the ball or the situation. The movement is largely externally paced.
- Example: passing or dribbling in football, where opponents and teammates are constantly moving.
