A haemodialysis unit earns the name "artificial kidney" because it replicates, outside the body, the kidney's core job of clearing nitrogenous wastes from the blood.

When the kidneys fail and urea accumulates in the blood as uremia, haemodialysis provides a way to remove this excess waste artificially, essentially standing in for the failed organ.

  • Blood is first drawn from a suitable artery, and an anticoagulant such as heparin is added to prevent it from clotting during the process.
