By selectively secreting hydrogen ions, potassium ions and ammonia into the filtrate at several points along the tubule, the kidney fine-tunes the ionic and acid-base balance of the body's fluids.

While urine is being formed, the tubular cells do not simply reabsorb substances — they also actively add certain substances into the filtrate, a process called tubular secretion, and this is an important step for regulating the body's internal chemistry.

  • In the proximal convoluted tubule, cells secrete hydrogen ions and ammonia into the filtrate and absorb bicarbonate from it, helping keep pH and ionic balance steady.
  • In the distal convoluted tubule, cells can reabsorb bicarbonate and selectively secrete hydrogen and potassium ions and ammonia, again maintaining pH and the sodium-potassium balance of the blood.
  • In the collecting duct, hydrogen and potassium ions are similarly secreted selectively, contributing further to pH and ionic balance. …
