Q.IQ of a person is given by the formula IQ=MACA×100IQ = \dfrac{MA}{CA} \times 100, where MA is mental age and CA is chronological age. If 80≤IQ≤14080 \le IQ \le 140 for a group of 12 years old children, find the range of their mental age.

IQ is the ratio of mental age to chronological age, scaled by 100. For 12‑year‑olds with IQ between 80 and 140, mental age ranges from 9.6 years to 16.8 years.

The formula IQ=MACA×100IQ = \dfrac{MA}{CA} \times 100 tells us that IQ is a percentage — it compares how a child’s mental development (MA) measures up against their actual age (CA). When IQ is exactly 100, mental age equals chronological age: the child is developing right on schedule. An IQ above 100 means mental age is ahead of chronological age; below 100 means it’s behind.

Here, all children have the same chronological age: CA=12CA = 12 years. So the only thing that varies is their mental age. The problem gives us a range for IQ, and asks for the corresponding range of MA.

  1. Write the inequality for IQ. We know 80≤IQ≤14080 \le IQ \le 140. Substitute the formula:

80≤MA12×100≤14080 \le \frac{MA}{12} \times 100 \le 140

  1. Isolate MA. Divide every part of the inequality by 100:

80100≤MA12≤140100\frac{80}{100} \le \frac{MA}{12} \le \frac{140}{100}

Simplify the fractions:

0.8≤MA12≤1.40.8 \le \frac{MA}{12} \le 1.4

  1. Multiply through by 12 (which is positive, so the inequality direction stays the same):

0.8×12≤MA≤1.4×120.8 \times 12 \le MA \le 1.4 \times 12

9.6≤MA≤16.89.6 \le MA \le 16.8 …
