Q.On a PP-VV diagram an ideal gas changes state from AA to BB. State AA is at the upper-left (higher pressure, smaller volume) and state BB is at the lower-right (lower pressure, larger volume). Four different paths connect the same AA and BB: path I is the uppermost curve, bulging upward so that it lies at the highest pressures between AA and BB; path IV lies just below path I; path II is a nearly straight path through the middle; path III is the lowermost curve, sagging downward so that it lies at the lowest pressures. More than one of the following statements may be correct — choose all that are true.

(a) Change in internal energy is the same in cases IV and III, but not in cases I and II.
(b) Change in internal energy is the same in all the four cases.
(c) Work done is maximum in case I.
(d) Work done is minimum in case II.

Because AA and BB are fixed, the change in internal energy ΔU=UB−UA\Delta U=U_B-U_A is the same along every path (B is true). Work equals the area under the PP-VV curve, so the highest path I does the most work (C is true); the lowest path III does the least, which makes D (naming II) false, and A false.

Concept

  • Internal energy UU is a state function: ΔU\Delta U depends only on the endpoints, not on the path.
  • Work done by the gas W=∫ABP dVW=\int_A^B P\,dV is the area under the path, so a path lying at higher pressure encloses more area and does more work.

Evaluating each option

  • (A) Claims ΔU\Delta U differs between paths — false; ΔU\Delta U is the same for all four. …
