Functions of Money
Money is not a single-purpose tool; it performs several distinct roles that together make a modern economy possible.
Demand for Money and Supply of Money
The amount of money in an economy is shaped by two distinct forces: how much money people want to hold (the demand for money) and how much money is actually available (the supply of money).
Demand for Money
The demand for money is not about wanting money for its own sake — it is about wanting a certain amount of cash or liquid funds to carry out everyday life.
Supply of Money
In a modern economy, money is not just the currency you carry. It also includes bank deposits — the money you hold in your savings or current account.
Money Creation by Banking System
Banks do not simply act as intermediaries that take deposits and then lend them out. They actually create new money in the process.
Balance Sheet of a Fictional Bank
Every bank begins with a simple transaction: someone deposits money. In our fictional bank, Ms Fernandes deposits Rs 100.
Limits to Credit Creation and Money Multiplier
The idea that a bank can keep lending out every rupee it receives might suggest that banks could create an unlimited amount of money.
Policy Tools to Control Money Supply
The Reserve Bank of India is the sole institution authorised to issue currency in the country. When commercial banks need additional funds to expand their lending and create more credit, they can eith…
Appendix 3.1: The Sum of an Infinite Geometric Series
This appendix derives the formula for the sum of an infinite geometric series — the result the chapter uses to obtain the value of the money multiplier.
Appendix 3.2: Money Supply in India
This appendix reproduces the NCERT chapter appendix on money supply in India, showing how narrow money () and broad money () have grown over time.
Appendix 3.3: Components of Money Stock
Changes in the composition of the sources of the monetary base over time.
