A mobile hotspot allows your smartphone to share its cellular data connection with other devices (laptops, tablets, other phones) by creating a Wi-Fi network.

Creating a mobile hotspot on your smartphone is a common and highly useful feature that allows you to share your phone's cellular internet connection with other Wi-Fi-enabled devices. This is particularly helpful when you are in an area without access to a traditional Wi-Fi network, such as public places, during travel, or if your home internet is temporarily down.

Understanding Mobile Hotspots

At its core, a mobile hotspot turns your smartphone into a portable Wi-Fi router. Your phone uses its cellular data (4G, 5G) to access the internet and then broadcasts a local Wi-Fi network. Other devices can then connect to this Wi-Fi network using a password, just as they would connect to any other Wi-Fi network.

The primary advantage is convenience and portability. You can provide internet access to multiple devices simultaneously, making it an essential tool for productivity and connectivity on the go.

Watch out

Using a mobile hotspot consumes your phone's cellular data. Be mindful of your data plan limits to avoid unexpected charges or throttling. It also drains your phone's battery much faster than normal usage, so keep a charger or power bank handy.

Steps to Create a Hotspot and Connect Devices

The process is largely similar across different smartphone operating systems, but the exact menu names might vary slightly. We will cover both Android and iOS.

On an Android Smartphone
  1. Open Settings: Swipe down from the top of your screen to open the Quick Settings panel, then tap the gear icon (⚙️) to open the main Settings app. Alternatively, find the "Settings" app icon in your app drawer.
  2. Navigate to Network Settings: Look for an option like "Network & internet," "Connections," or "Wireless & networks." Tap on it.
  3. Find Hotspot & Tethering: Within the network settings, you should see an option named "Hotspot & tethering" or "Mobile Hotspot and Tethering." Tap this option.
  4. Enable Wi-Fi Hotspot: Tap on "Wi-Fi hotspot" or "Mobile Hotspot." You will usually find a toggle switch to turn it "On."
  5. Configure Hotspot Settings:
    • Hotspot name (SSID): This is the name of the Wi-Fi network that other devices will see. You can usually customize this (e.g., "MyPhoneHotspot").
    • Security: Ensure it's set to WPA2-Personal or WPA3-Personal for strong encryption.
    • Hotspot password: This is the password other devices will need to enter to connect. It's crucial to set a strong, unique password for security.
    • You might also find options for "AP band" (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz) and "Maximum connections."
  6. Turn On: Once configured, toggle the "Wi-Fi hotspot" switch to the "On" position. Your phone is now broadcasting a Wi-Fi network.
On an iOS (iPhone) Smartphone
  1. Open Settings: Tap the "Settings" app icon on your home screen.
  2. Find Personal Hotspot: Tap on "Personal Hotspot." If you don't see it immediately, it might be under "Cellular" > "Personal Hotspot."
  3. Enable Personal Hotspot: Toggle the "Allow Others to Join" switch to the "On" position.
  4. Note the Wi-Fi Password: iOS automatically generates a Wi-Fi password. You will see this password displayed on the "Personal Hotspot" screen. You can tap on it to change it to something easier to remember but still strong.
  5. Connection Methods: iOS typically offers three ways to connect:
    • Wi-Fi: This is the most common method.
    • Bluetooth: For connecting to devices via Bluetooth. …
