Special Olympics divisioning ensures fair competition by grouping athletes according to age, gender, and ability level (demonstrated performance).

Special Olympics exists to give athletes with intellectual disabilities meaningful competition in which they can succeed and grow. Simply throwing everyone into a single event would be neither fair nor motivating: a 12-year-old competing against a 40-year-old, or someone who can run 100 m in 20 seconds racing someone who takes 35 seconds, would produce lopsided heats that teach nothing and celebrate no one. Divisioning solves this by creating smaller, homogeneous groups within each event so that every athlete competes against peers of similar characteristics.

The three factors are:

1. Age

Athletes are grouped into age brackets to account for physical and developmental differences. A teenager's strength, coordination, and endurance differ markedly from those of a middle-aged adult, even when both have similar intellectual disabilities. Age divisions typically span ranges like 8–11 years, 12–15 years, 16–21 years, 22–29 years, and 30+ years, though the exact bands depend on the event and the number of entries.

2. Gender

Male and female athletes compete separately in most events. This reflects the physiological differences in muscle mass, aerobic capacity, and body composition that emerge after puberty and persist into adulthood. Mixed-gender divisions exist only in certain team sports or Unified Sports® events where the structure of the game allows it.
