An inverted pyramid of biomass occurs in marine (aquatic) ecosystems, where the standing biomass of producers is less than that of consumers at any given moment.

When we think about ecological pyramids, we usually picture a stable, broad base of producers supporting progressively smaller tiers of herbivores and carnivores above. This is the classic upright pyramid of biomass seen in most terrestrial ecosystems like forests, grasslands, and tundra. The logic is straightforward: you need a large mass of plants to support a smaller mass of herbivores, which in turn supports an even smaller mass of carnivores.

But marine ecosystems break this rule in a fascinating way. The producers here—phytoplankton—are tiny, single-celled organisms floating in the water. At any snapshot in time, their total biomass is actually smaller than the biomass of the zooplankton (herbivores) and fish (carnivores) that feed on them. This creates an inverted pyramid, narrow at the base and broader as you move up.

How is this possible without the system collapsing? The answer lies in the extraordinary turnover rate of phytoplankton. These microscopic algae reproduce incredibly rapidly—sometimes doubling their population in a matter of hours or days. Though their standing crop (the biomass present at any moment) is small, their productivity over time is enormous. Think of it like a small bakery with a tiny display case but a very fast oven: at any given moment there are only a few loaves on the shelf, but over the course of a day, hundreds are produced and sold. …
