Energy decreases at each trophic level because only about 10% of the energy from one level is transferred to the next; the rest is lost as heat or used for life processes.

In ecology, the flow of energy through an ecosystem is governed by the laws of thermodynamics. The sun is the primary source of energy for most ecosystems, captured by producers (plants) through photosynthesis. This energy then moves through the food chain as organisms eat one another. However, this transfer is never efficient.

The key reason organisms at higher trophic levels have less energy available is rooted in how energy is used and lost at each step. When a herbivore eats a plant, not all the plant’s energy becomes part of the herbivore’s body. A large portion is lost as heat during respiration, some is used for growth and reproduction, and some is simply not digested and is excreted as waste. The same happens when a carnivore eats a herbivore. Only a small fraction — roughly 10% — of the energy from one trophic level is actually converted into biomass at the next level. This is known as the 10% law of energy transfer, a concept clearly stated in the NCERT textbook.

Note

The 10% law is an average; actual transfer can vary depending on the ecosystem and the organisms involved, but the principle of decreasing energy remains constant.

This progressive loss of energy explains why food chains rarely have more than four or five trophic levels. By the time energy reaches a top predator, such as a lion or an eagle, the amount available is very small. That is why populations of top predators are always much smaller than those of producers or herbivores — there simply isn’t enough energy to support a large number of individuals at the highest level. …
