Take the transaction: 'Paid electricity bill ₹4,000 in cash.'

Traditional approach: Electricity Charges A/c is a Nominal Account (an expense) → debit all expenses → debited. Cash A/c is a Real Account, and cash is going out of the business → credit what goes out → credited.

Modern approach: Electricity Charges is an Expense → expenses increase by debit → debited. Cash is an Asset → assets decrease by credit → credited.

Both approaches converge on the identical entry:

Electricity Charges A/c …Dr.4,000
To Cash A/c4,000
(Being electricity bill paid in cash)
