A proper warm-up moves in three stages, general to specific -- light aerobic activity, then stretching, then sport-specific drills -- gradually raising the body's readiness for the main session.

The method (steps) of a proper warm-up:

  • General warm-up -- about 5-10 minutes of light aerobic activity, such as jogging, light jumping or cycling, that gradually raises heart rate, breathing rate and muscle temperature.
  • Stretching -- dynamic stretching of the major muscle groups that will be used in the coming activity, improving joint range of motion and preparing the muscles and tendons for load. (Static, held stretching is kept for the cool-down afterward, not the warm-up.)
  • Specific warm-up -- sport-specific movements and drills that closely resemble the actual activity to follow (e.g. practice shots, short run-throughs, gradual sprints), performed at gradually increasing intensity so the body is fully primed for the demands of the main session. …
