Recovery is when adaptation actually happens, so it is a genuine part of training; two means are adequate sleep and proper nutrition.

Importance of recovery. Training breaks down the body; it is during recovery that the body repairs the tissue and rebuilds itself slightly stronger. Without adequate recovery there is no adaptation, fatigue accumulates, performance falls, and the risk of over-training and injury rises.

Why recovery is a part of training, not merely a break. The improvement the athlete is training for — the adaptation — takes place during recovery, not during the workout itself. The workout supplies the stimulus; recovery converts that stimulus into a real gain. Because the gain literally happens in the recovery phase, recovery is a planned, essential component of the training process, not idle time off.
