Pranayama = controlled breathing; its three phases are Puraka (inhale), Kumbhaka (hold) and Rechaka (exhale).

Meaning of Pranayama: The word combines prana (the vital life-force carried by the breath) and ayama (control, regulation or extension). Pranayama is therefore the conscious control and regulation of the breath, which increases vitality, steadies the mind and prepares it for meditation.
