Step 1. An aggregate fruit develops from a SINGLE flower that has an apocarpous pistil (many distinct, unfused carpels). Each free carpel matures into its own small fruitlet - a drupe, achene, follicle or berry - and the whole collection of fruitlets sitting together on one receptacle is called an etaerio. Examples: Magnolia, raspberry, Annona, Polyalthia.

Step 2. A multiple (composite) fruit, in contrast, develops from an ENTIRE inflorescence, together with its peduncle - so many flowers, not carpels of one flower, contribute to a single compound fruit. A sorosis develops from a spike or spadix, with the individual flowers fusing via their succulent perianths while the axis itself turns fleshy (pineapple, jackfruit, mulberry); a syconus develops from a hypanthodium inflorescence, with the receptacle enlarging and turning fleshy to enclose the many small true fruits/achenes formed from the female flowers inside it (fig). …
