Timber

Timber is wood derived from felled tree logs, and it is put to enormously wide use, especially in carpentry and house construction. Beyond its direct commercial value, timber-forming wood also plays a significant environmental role: as the tissue that sequestrates atmospheric carbon within a growing tree's trunk, it helps reduce global warming. Once logs are sawn into usable pieces - most commonly by rib sawing, the most widely used method of preparing timber - the resulting wood is not yet ready for use as-is: it still carries substantial moisture, which must be removed through a process called seasoning before the timber is strong, stable and durable enough for construction or carpentry.
