The Zeroth Law says two systems that are each in thermal equilibrium with a third system must be in thermal equilibrium with each other — this is the basis for defining temperature.

Two systems are said to be in thermal equilibrium when there is no net flow of heat between them when they are brought into contact, meaning they are at the same temperature. The Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics formalises an everyday observation: if system A is in thermal equilibrium with system C, and separately system B is also in thermal equilibrium with system C, then A and B must also be in thermal equilibrium with each other, even without being placed in direct contact.
