Taking g = 9.8 m/s^2 and R = 6400 km, g at 200 km height works out to about 9.19 m/s^2 while g at 200 km depth works out to about 9.49 m/s^2 — so g is smaller above the surface.

At a height h above the Earth's surface (h << R), the acceleration due to gravity is approximately:

g_h = g (1 - 2h/R)

At a depth d below the Earth's surface, the acceleration due to gravity is:

g_d = g (1 - d/R)

Taking g = 9.8 m/s^2, R = 6400 km, and h = d = 200 km:

At height h = 200 km:

g_h = 9.8 × (1 - 2×200/6400) = 9.8 × (1 - 0.0625) = 9.8 × 0.9375 ≈ 9.19 m/s^2

At depth d = 200 km:

g_d = 9.8 × (1 - 200/6400) = 9.8 × (1 - 0.03125) = 9.8 × 0.96875 ≈ 9.49 m/s^2
