A projectile is any body given an initial velocity and then allowed to move under gravity alone, tracing a parabolic path; e.g., a thrown ball or a fired bullet.

A projectile is defined as an object or particle that is given an initial velocity (at some angle to the horizontal, or purely horizontal, or purely vertical) and is thereafter acted upon only by the constant, downward force of gravity (air resistance is neglected in the idealised treatment). Its horizontal motion is uniform velocity (no horizontal force acts on it) while its vertical motion is uniformly accelerated (due to g), and the combination of these two independent motions traces out a parabolic trajectory.

Examples:

  1. A ball or stone thrown at some angle to the horizontal (e.g., in a game of cricket or a shot-put throw). …
