Step 1. All non-zero digits are significant (1342→41342\to4 sig. figs.).

Step 2. All zeros BETWEEN two non-zero digits are significant (2008→42008\to4 sig. figs.).

Step 3. Zeros to the right of a non-zero digit but to the LEFT of a decimal point are significant (30700.→530700.\to5 sig. figs.).

Step 4. Without a decimal point, trailing zeros are NOT significant, unless they are known to come from an actual measurement (30700→330700\to3 sig. figs., but 3070030700 m, a measured length, →5\to5 sig. figs.).

Step 5. For a number less than 1, zeros to the right of the decimal point but to the LEFT of the first non-zero digit are NOT significant (0.00345→30.00345\to3 sig. figs.).

Step 6. All zeros to the right of a decimal point AND to the right of a non-zero digit ARE significant (40.00→440.00\to4; 0.030400→50.030400\to5). …
