A receding light source shows its spectrum shifted toward longer (red) wavelengths — red shift; an approaching source shows a shift toward shorter (blue) wavelengths — blue shift.

The Doppler effect applies to light just as it does to sound: relative motion between a light source and an observer changes the observed wavelength/frequency of the light compared to what is emitted.

Red shift: When the source of light is moving away from the observer, the observed wavelength increases (frequency decreases) compared to the emitted wavelength. Since longer visible wavelengths lie toward the red end of the spectrum, this apparent stretching of wavelength is called a red shift. (This is the basis for concluding that distant galaxies are receding from us, as most show red-shifted spectral lines.)
