Peritonitis is inflammation of the peritoneum — the membrane lining the abdominal wall and covering the abdominal organs — usually caused by infection or irritation spreading into the abdominal cavity.

The peritoneum is a thin, double-layered serous membrane: the parietal peritoneum lines the inner wall of the abdominal cavity, and the visceral peritoneum covers the surface of the abdominal organs, with a thin fluid-filled space between them that allows organs to move smoothly during digestion.
