The human large intestine runs, in order, from the caecum through the ascending, transverse, descending and sigmoid colon to the rectum and anal canal; a hand-drawn figure isn't possible in this format, so the parts are listed here instead, in their correct anatomical sequence, for you to label onto your own diagram.

The large intestine begins where the small intestine (ileum) opens into it via the ileo-caecal valve, and continues as follows:

  1. Caecum: a small pouch at the start of the large intestine, into which the ileum opens; it bears the narrow, finger-like vermiform appendix projecting from it.
  2. Ascending colon: runs upward on the right side of the abdomen from the caecum to below the liver.
  3. Hepatic (right colic) flexure: the bend where the ascending colon turns to become the transverse colon, near the liver.
  4. Transverse colon: runs horizontally across the upper abdomen from right to left.
  5. Splenic (left colic) flexure: the bend near the spleen where the transverse colon turns downward into the descending colon.
  6. Descending colon: runs downward on the left side of the abdomen.
  7. Sigmoid colon: the S-shaped part connecting the descending colon to the rectum.
  8. Rectum: a short, straight terminal part that stores faeces before elimination. …
