The alary muscles are fan-shaped muscles that anchor the cockroach's dorsal tubular heart to the body wall, and their rhythmic contraction/relaxation drives the drawing in and pumping forward of haemolymph.

In the cockroach (an insect with an open circulatory system), the heart is a long, thin, segmented dorsal tube lying in the pericardial cavity along the mid-dorsal line of the body, divided into a series of chambers each with a pair of lateral openings called ostia. On either side of the heart, a pair of fan-shaped alary muscles arise from the body wall (tergum) and attach to the heart in each segment.
