The female frog's reproductive system consists of a pair of ovaries that produce ova, a pair of coiled oviducts (Mullerian ducts) that receive and coat the eggs, and an ovisac/cloaca through which the eggs are finally released for fertilisation outside the body.

The frog's female reproductive system is built around the following structures:

  1. Ovaries — a pair of large, lobed, sac-like organs located in the abdominal cavity close to the kidneys. During the breeding season, the ovaries enlarge enormously as they fill with thousands of developing ova (eggs), often making up a large fraction of the animal's body volume just before spawning. The ovaries have no direct duct connection to the oviducts — mature eggs are simply released into the body (coelomic) cavity.

  2. Oviducts (Mullerian ducts) — a pair of long, highly coiled tubes lying alongside the ovaries. Each oviduct begins anteriorly with a wide, funnel-shaped opening called the ostium, which collects the eggs released into the coelomic cavity by ciliary currents. As eggs travel down the coiled oviduct, glandular cells in its walls secrete a layer of transparent jelly around each egg; this jelly coat swells on contact with water and protects the egg and later helps sperm adhere to it during external fertilisation.

  3. Ovisac (uterus) — the posterior part of each oviduct widens into a thin-walled sac called the ovisac, which temporarily stores the jelly-coated eggs before they are laid.
