Dead space is the air-filled volume of the conducting airways (nasal passage down to the terminal bronchioles) that does not take part in the actual exchange of O2 and CO2, because there are no alveoli in this region.

When air is inhaled, it must first pass through a series of conducting passages — the nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi and bronchioles — before it reaches the alveoli, where actual gas exchange with the blood takes place. The air that remains in these conducting passages at the end of inspiration never reaches functional alveolar surfaces, so no exchange of O2/CO2 occurs there.
