Answering part (a): Mechanism of breathing.
Inspiration (breathing in):
- The diaphragm (a dome-shaped muscle beneath the lungs) contracts and flattens, moving downward.
- The external intercostal muscles (between the ribs) contract, lifting the ribs upward and outward.
- Together, these actions increase the volume of the thoracic (chest) cavity.
- According to Boyle's law, increasing volume decreases pressure — so the pressure inside the lungs (intrapulmonary pressure) falls below atmospheric pressure.
- Because gases flow from high to low pressure, air rushes in from outside through the nostrils, trachea, and bronchi into the alveoli, expanding the lungs — this is inspiration.
Expiration (breathing out):
- The diaphragm relaxes and returns to its dome shape, moving upward.
- The external intercostal muscles relax, and the ribs move back down and inward (aided by the elastic recoil of lung tissue).
- This decreases the volume of the thoracic cavity.
- Decreasing volume increases the intrapulmonary pressure above atmospheric pressure.
- Air is pushed out of the lungs to the atmosphere — this is expiration.
Normal quiet breathing is largely a passive process for expiration (relying on elastic recoil), while forced/deep breathing recruits additional muscles such as the internal intercostals and abdominal muscles to actively push air out faster.
