A Statement of Affairs is a statement listing all the assets and liabilities of a business as on a particular date, in exactly the same format as a Balance Sheet, with Capital derived as the balancing figure: Capital = Assets − Liabilities.
Difference from a Balance Sheet
| Point of Difference | Statement of Affairs | Balance Sheet |
|---|---|---|
| Source of figures | Prepared from incomplete records; figures are often estimated or physically verified rather than taken from ledger balances | Prepared from a complete, balanced set of ledger accounts maintained under Double Entry |
| Reliability of Capital | Only a residual estimate; accuracy depends entirely on how correctly assets and liabilities were estimated | Fully reliable, since it flows directly from accurate ledger balances |
| Effect of an omission | An omitted asset or liability silently distorts the capital figure, with nothing to catch the error | An omission would normally be caught because the double entry system is self-checking |
