Under the single-entry system (incomplete records) proper ledger balances are not available, so capital cannot be taken directly. A statement of affairs is prepared instead. In the Tamil Nadu HSC Class-12 Accountancy syllabus it is described as follows:

It is a statement, similar in form to a balance sheet, prepared from whatever information is available (and estimates where needed).

All liabilities are shown on one side and all assets on the other, as on a particular date.

The balancing figure, i.e. the excess of assets over liabilities, is the capital on that date:
Capital = Total Assets − Total Liabilities
