The pyramid of energy is always upright because energy loss at each trophic transfer (the 10% law) makes energy content decrease progressively up the food chain, with no exceptions.

An ecological pyramid of energy represents the amount (rate) of energy present at each successive trophic level of a food chain -- producers at the base, followed by primary consumers, secondary consumers, and so on.

Energy flow through an ecosystem is unidirectional -- it flows from producers to consumers and is ultimately lost from the system as heat, and is never recycled back, unlike matter/nutrients. According to the 10% law (and consistent with the second law of thermodynamics, which dictates that some energy is always dissipated as heat during any energy transformation), only about 10% of the energy present at one trophic level is, on average, successfully transferred to and incorporated into the biomass of the next trophic level. The remaining roughly 90% is lost, mainly as heat during cellular respiration, or remains unused/undigested.

Because of this consistent, substantial loss at every single transfer step, the total energy available necessarily decreases at each successive trophic level -- producers always have the greatest energy content, primary consumers less, secondary consumers still less, and so on. This progressive decrease means the pyramid of energy can never be inverted in any ecosystem; it is always broad at the base and narrows towards the apex, i.e., always upright.
