Plant introduction is a method/step used in plant breeding, involving the deliberate transfer of a new plant genotype, cultivated variety, or wild/related species -- not indigenous to a particular area -- from another region or country into cultivation or into a breeding programme in the new area.

Types:

1. Primary introduction -- the introduced variety performs well and is well-adapted as-is, so it is released directly for cultivation without further breeding.
2. Secondary introduction -- the introduced material is not directly suitable for release, but is used as a parent (a source of useful genes, e.g. for disease resistance) in subsequent hybridisation and selection programmes with local varieties. …
